“For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk “ – Stephen Hawking
A prominent and pretty famous magician, one whom I’ve admired since I was a kid sent me a message not long ago. He’d seen me perform on the television show Penn and Teller Fool Us and wanted to let me know that he very much enjoyed my performance and went on to say a few nice things about the jokes and the blocking of the piece.
I was blown away.
I’ve been watching this magician perform and create magic since I was very young. He’s a borderline genius. To think he bothered to get his people to track down my email address and take the time to craft a note to me seems kind of madness, but there it is. It made me my day that he wrote to me and it still makes me very happy when I think of it.
Until that email came in I was seriously considering getting out of show business. I guess I was feeling burnt out and unappreciated. This magician who generously gave of his time, changed my mind and reinvigorated me to keep on plugging away in the business of show.
Hilariously, I didn’t think I had that amazing a spot on the Fool US, but this magician did. All this isn’t to blow my own horn, but to make note of something pretty important. You never know to whom you may be important. Take the time to write a note to someone if you think they’re doing something nice or doing good work. Maybe it’ll change their lives. If nothing else you’re keeping communication open between humans… how’s that a bad thing?
Hey, here’s my spot on Penn and Teller Fool US. You can decide if its good or bad. No one’s reading this anyway, so I find it kind of funny I’m talking to no one J
