TV Taping

Sometimes it’s worth the trek to nowhere. This weekend I performed in Fergus Ontario, Its an hour outside Toronto.  Not that far. At the Fergus Grand Theatre, a local producer, Ryan Joyce, shot in 4k video no less, what will soon become a tv show. A show that puts a spotlight on local yet world class Canadian variety acts. Not many true variety shows on television now that don’t pivot on som...

We Lost Another

Every comic in the country is posting about Mike MacDonald tonight. He died March 17th 2018 at 63 years old. EVERYONE is posting about him.As they should. He was a game changer. A legend to be sure. He could be burry and abrasive at times, especially if he didn’t know you. Meh. Whatever. He was a serious talent. I’m younger than most of the comics who knew him, and even though I started yo...

Writing

I make weird choices sometimes, especially when it comes to writing material for my show. I have a strong belief that if I write what I like, the audience will sense that I’m doing something I love and get on board with that.Doesn’t always work, especially during the early days of a new hunk of material. This is happening right now. It’s fun, and weird, and it’s the job. Gotta suck it up. ...

Confidence

I’ve been talking about Holland America Cruises lately. I’m performing on one right now, where I’m currently in the middle of the Pacific Ocean half way between California and Hawaii. I’ve been headlining shows for them for a while now. I love the theatre, the corporate culture, the accommodations and the way I’m treated. As far as I can tell, having worked MANY cruise lines over the last 10 ye...

Technology

Look, I’m a pretty low tech guy.Updating this blog every week is quite a chore for me. I really don’t have much patience for the internet and electronic banking, cell phone wizardry and all that jazz.
Until very recently I didn’t even use internet banking, and still went every week to the teller at the bank to pay my bills. To this day I use a typewriter to type up thank you notes to my co...

Curtains Up

That image is a picture of the theatre I'll be performing at next week. There’s a moment right before the curtain opens and you walk out to perform for those thousand or 1500 audience members in the house.  It’s a short moment, maybe a second.  You take a breath, and walk through that red crushed velvet wall, smile and go to work. That’s my favourite moment of all things in professional show...

Lifestyle

Visited a friend in the hospital. One of the older acts I first met when I came to Toronto show business.   He’s one of the best comedy magicians I’ve ever seen. He was about to go in for a quadruple bypass.  I can only imagine the stress of knowing doctors are going to crack open your breast plate and fiddle with your heart. The operation was completed just the other day and he’s fine. So tha...

New Year

“This just might do nobody any good”.  The opening to one of the most epic speeches in the history of broadcast.Happy new year.  2018 is here. What are your resolutions??? One of mine is to never use that image at the top of this post again ;)Not sure what my plans are for this trip around the sun, but our history will be what we make of it.I asked myself what my hero’s might do to ...

Terminology

There’s a distinction. Comedy magician and comedian / magician.Interestingly, and maybe annoyingly, magicians seem to use the terms interchangeably. It needs to be dealt with, because there’s a big difference between a magician with some funny lines in their show and a magician who’s actually a COMEDIAN. I used to think that if you had a comedy club background, by that I mean actually pe...

Thank You All

Well that’s it.  The month of performing at corporate holiday parties has ended, as has my last show for the 2017 year.I’ve performed on television shows, theatres, cruise ships, corporate events in Europe and beyond.  I am VERY grateful for the opportunities given to me. I’ve often said that show business has been very good to me, better perhaps than I deserve.I’m excited to see what w...
